This introductory chapter first sets out the focus of the book, namely the Scots dialects of northern Scotland and the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland — dialects spoken by a wide variety of people living very different lives in divergent natural environments. It then presents overviews of Northern and Insular Scots dialects, and the geography and culture of the region. This is followed by a brief explanation on the use of the term ‘Scots’ versus ‘English’.
