This chapter presents texts that provide a comprehensive ‘snapshot’ of local speech norms throughout northern Scotland and the Northern Isles. For each sample, a transcription into a Scots form of English spelling, a broad phonemic transcription, and a discussion of the particularly noteworthy features of the informant's speech are provided. Where words or phrases are used which are not normal outside the Scots-speaking world (or are confined to a particular Scots dialect), a glossary is provided after the first transcription.
