This chapter examines the problem of national identity and borderlines. It investigates the connection between the nation-state and the citizen, and explores how alternative social spaces can be produced using Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's concepts of the rhizome and smooth space. The chapter argues that the current situation of border politics, whereby the state apparatus functions through a mechanism of inclusion and exclusion, only ends up immobilising sociality.
