This chapter identifies the role of accent, dialect and speech in the formation of national identity, and considers the relevance of the strategies of mimicry. It shows how new adjustments of national self-presentation and style were caused by American popular song styles. The chapter also compares the cultural contests of voice with the history of the English singing voice.
