This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to understand how music interacts with young people's everyday lives. In relation to a considerable and expanding body of previous research in this subject area, it adopts an interactionist perspective to shed light on orthodox structuralist frameworks for conceptualising youth music cultures. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
