This chapter considers Jefferson's efforts to shape the history of the American Revolution and his role in the creation of the American republic. It argues that Jefferson sought to promote his own interpretation of the revolution by corresponding with early historians of the conflict and by presenting his account of the founding of the republic in his autobiography and personal notes, known as ‘the anas’.
