Medieval jurists made much use of the work of their predecessors, often without express acknowledgment. The Italian jurist Cinus made much use of French predecessors, with acknowledgment, and a study of his commentary on one title of the Code shows that he used the work of Pierre de Belleperche as the basis of his own commentary. He is not however as slavishly dependent as sometimes suggested.
