This chapter focuses on the revitalization of Singapore cinema over a period of approximately two decades. Three tendencies are seen as characteristic of this period, namely cultural nationalism, technocratic nationalism, and ambivalent nationalism. Specific films are shown to have been shaped by and thus to illustrate these tendencies. Films produced by Raintree Pictures within the context of a regional film paradigm are seen as especially revealing, as are independent productions by such filmmakers as Erik Khoo and Royston Tan.
