This introductory chapter begins with discussions of the history and languages of Singapore. It then describes the varieties of Singapore English, and the sources of data used in this study. The main subject of the study is a thirty-four-year-old ethnically Chinese, female, Singaporean undergraduate, referred to as Hui Min (not her real name). At the time of the recording, she was in her Honours year at the National Institute of Education in Singapore, where English was one of her teaching subjects as well as her chosen speciality. The chapter then discusses the National Institute of Education Corpus of Spoken Singapore English data and the use of blogs. A brief overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
