This chapter addresses the question of the inevitability of the regulative principles of connection, disjunction, and conjunction as an ontological structure, and proposes a thesis that it may well be little more than the apparent lack of constraint on the part of the mind which gave rise to so-called societies of discipline. It also examines the structure and effects of the passivity in the cultural climate, particularly as it pertains to the concepts and realization of pleasure and pain.

Keywords: ontological structure; principles of connection; disjunction; conjunction; societies of discipline; passivity; cultural climate; pleasure; pain
