This chapter investigates the representations of the Spanish Civil War in newsreel coverage, photojournalism, and the editorial responses of weekly news periodicals. Anthony Aldgate's analysis demonstrates that, in terms of content, newsreel coverage of Spain was threadbare by comparison to the national daily press. The most comprehensive analysis of photographic representation of the Spanish Civil War is Caroline Brothers' 1997 book War and Photography. She organises her analysis under three thematic groupings to identify ideological differences between and within the British and French photographic media: combatants, civilians, and victims. A summary on the editorial responses of other national news publications in Britain to events in Spain is presented. Visual media were significant because they apparently allowed the British public ‘a special form of witnessing’ of the drama and tragedy of the Spanish War.
