Genre and the Quiz Show

This chapter examines the complex relations between quiz shows and genre. In doing so, it explores different approaches to genre (such as textual and discursive — drawing in particular on the work of Jason Mittell, 2004), and considers how the quiz show’s generic status can be illuminated by these approaches. The chapter examines the different connotations of the words ‘quiz’ and ‘game’, whilst also considering the relationship between genre and ‘format’. Finally, the chapter considers how reality game shows have impacted upon definitions of the quiz/ game show.
