This chapter explores the broadcast roots of the quiz show in the British and American contexts, while considering how the development of the genre was shaped by the differing national systems of broadcasting (radio). This includes examining how public service (BBC) and commercial broadcasting systems approached the regulation and the development of the genre (such as the regulation of prizes). This also involves exploring the cultural anxieties which circulated around this type of programming, both institutionally and culturally. With regard to the British context, the chapter considers how the advent of commercial television (ITV) impacted on the genre, and how the American ‘quiz show’ scandals shaped its future development.
