The relationship between quiz shows and knowledge has been a key theme in quiz show scholarship — particularly in terms of how the quiz show has ideological implications. This chapter examines this relationship, with a particular focus on issues of gender and class. It first focuses on the marginalisation of female hosts in the genre, before examining the ideological implications of the claim that ‘everybody is equal’ when it comes to the competitive purpose of the quiz show. It then goes on to consider how we can approach knowledge historically in the genre, focusing on examples such as The Price is Right, and the 1950s American ‘Big Money’ quiz shows. Drawing on Fiske’s (1987) work, the chapter goes on to consider how the quiz show grounds class differences in “natural” differences, with a particular focus on the class politics of Who Wants to be a Millionaire in the British context.
