This chapter discusses memorial culture from the vantage point of libidinal energy. It outlines two very different investments of social remembrance: a schizoid investment of desire that occurs when memorial culture registers the social force of collective trauma; and a fascistic investment of memorial culture which occurs when the energies and affects the labour of memory produces are coded and given a fixed use. The chapter discusses Gilles Deleuze's view that desire is social and suggests that the character memorial culture takes depends on how desires are invested throughout the social field.
