This chapter introduces Jean Baudrillard’s life and work in context. It sets out in brief the reasons why it is better to see Baudrillard in a non-postmodern context, and introduces the concept of non-postmodernity as an overarching framework for understanding Baudrillard. The various historical controversies surrounding the writings and pronouncements of Baudrillard are discussed and a case made for seeing Baudrillard as one of the most important and of critical modern intellectuals in the light of the extracts presented in the book.
