This chapter offers an account of the development of television drama in Scotland from the early days of theatre relays through literary adaptations to the commissioning of original plays and series. Central to the discussion is the fundamental problem of whether drama made in Scotland is for that country or for the UK as a whole. Crucial to the resolution of this question has always been the very high cost of drama and the consequent need for network financial support, whether for crime series such as Taggart, Scotland's most successful drama export, or the highly original serial Tutti Frutti. Succinct comments are offered on a range of drama output made in Scotland since the 1960s.
