This chapter argues that, while commercial music radio is the first choice of radio listeners in Scotland, the relationship with indigenous bands is not a close one. The chapter charts the growth of commercial radio in Scotland from the 1970s, the innovation and experiment of the early days across the range of output from journalism to music and live events, being succeeded by bland programming as local ownership has given way to multinational control. In the 1980s bands could rely on on-air exposure of their output to build followings, but now that is very unlikely and they have to devote themselves principally to live performance in Scotland and abroad. The contribution of the regulatory bodies to this situation is explored, as is BBC Scotland's intermittent engagement with the live music scene
