This chapter studies in detail some of the specific elements of epistolary protocol, first examining the two elements of letter-writing that were emphasised by the secretaries – the salutation and the honorifics – and second, discussing the relationship between the initial correspondence and the response. Last, it provides two samples of very different types of letters that indicate the manner of how the letter was constructed and on what theoretical bases.
