This chapter discusses the ways the text thematises a specifically modern resignation of subjective interiority to a series of mnemotechnical supplements. Its effect is to fragment experience and problematise the relationship between the narrative totality and individual episodes. The discussion shows that the narrator's task is to find or create a narrative and epistemological model which allows the dissimilar elements of experience to combine into a more meaningful whole.

Keywords: subjective interiority; mnemotechnical supplements; experience; narrative totality; individual episodes; narrative; epistemological model; elements of experience
