This chapter considers the question of why the archives of modernity that thematised the work of Sebald largely originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, instead of the late twentieth. It argues that Sebals's narrative project adopts Foucault's method, and that he views the key to the modern world in technologies and structures developed a hundred years ago. The chapter re-evaluates Sebald's view of history and his position within literary history.
