This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of the reasons behind language researchers' growing interest in third language (L3) acquisition. It presents some remarks on the concepts and terminology used in the study. It then describes the work reported in this book — a case study of an L3 learner of Swedish, based on a longitudinal corpus of Swedish conversations between the learner Sarah Williams and the native speaker Björn Hammarberg. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
