This chapter outlines the key ways sitcom has been, and can be, analysed. It shows how important sitcom is to worldwide broadcasting, by looking at a range of programming and its roles within particular channels and schedules. The social role of the sitcom is explored, especially as television as a domestic medium that unites large, national audiences. This chapter therefore shows how the sitcom can be used to explore television as a whole, and the social roles of broadcasting and humour.
