This book argues that Far from Heaven is one of the most significant American independent films of the last twenty years, a major milestone in the career of its director, and a provocative and challenging piece of work that is, like all of Todd Haynes' other movies, deeply political. This film is Haynes' most successful film to date in terms of reviews from critics, box office receipts, level of distribution and awards. This chapter reports a brief overview of Haynes' career. It also explores some factual detail regarding the genesis of Far from Heaven. The chapters in this book review different ways of thinking through and about Far from Heaven. An overview of each of these chapters is reported.
