SNP Economic Strategy: Neo-Liberalism with a Heart

Show Summary Details

This chapter evaluates the Scottish National Party (SNP) economic policy under devolution, with particular emphasis on its performance in the period during which the party has been in office. It classifies the SNP's variant of the policy as ‘neo-liberalism with a heart’. The SNP leadership realised that it was regarded by sections of the business community as being anti-business. As regards the current economic crisis, the Scottish government announced in October 2008 a number of tactical steps to counteract the effects on Scotland. It is clear that the SNP in power has tried to do what it had planned. The SNP made the grave tactical blunder of setting explicit targets for what an SNP government could obtain. The SNP's choice of long-term economic vision has proved damaging.
