The Scottish Parliament passed no less than fourteen education statutes between the beginning of 2000 and the end of 2009. This is hardly surprising given the importance of education to the future of Scottish society and the proud independent tradition of education in Scotland. This chapter discusses laws concerning children's rights, standards in education, social education and welfare, parental involvement in schools, school closures, independent schools, pre-school education, curriculum, provision for additional support needs, further and higher education and reserved and devolved issues.
