This introductory chapter explains the theme of this book, which is about the relevance of Alain Badiou's philosophy for the study of cinema. It suggests that cinema plays an important role in Badiou's proclaimed recommencement of philosophy under the aegis of a return to Plato and discusses the properly Platonic need to reconfigure the place of truth in cinema. The chapter attempts to draw out the radical consequences of Badiou's theses on cinema and evaluates the impact of cinema on Badiou's thought.
