This chapter focuses on the author's pilot and companion, Kemp Burdette, the thirty-six-year-old Cape Fear river keeper. He's been on the job a little less than a year. Formerly Kemp served as executive director of Cape Fear River Watch, the nonprofit organization that acts as steward of the river, supporting the work of the river keeper. He hoped that the change of jobs would allow him to be outdoors on the river every day, but in reality he still spends a lot of days at the computer, researching and emailing, or on the phone, scaring up support, advocating, and persuading people to pitch in—in his quiet, determined way, urging people to care. Kemp is the river's official champion.
