Throughout this chapter, the author details how the Japanese began to invade everyday Dutch life, beginning with the termination of his father's job. His family also faces difficult financial times until his father is able to return to work, all while the Japanese begin to ban any uniformed organization such as the Boy Scouts and salvation army. After his father is arrested, the author recounts a story of a Japanese officer's unsuccessful attempts to court his mother, as well as his own brushes with Japanese law officers.
