The recovery of the history of sodomy in the New World is of signal importance as one way of resisting modes of thinking which, every day, seem to be growing more widespread, and which the decision of the Supreme Court can be said to have licensed. Therefore, as an originary moment in the history of the making of America not the act “discovery” or the successful colonization (Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Independence Day) — and whose very duplications suggest that we don not quite know when or where America starts, that the justices' appeal to “fundamental” principles may cover a multiplicity that cannot be reduced to a single origin.
