The “Introduction” locates Spenser‟s unique meditation on vulnerability in relation to a network of contemporary instances of heroic disarmament and a variety of responses to vulnerability, from the writing of Sidney, Shakespeare, and Nashe to the paintings of Rubens. In particular, this introduction examines the allegory of Venus disarming Mars as both a dominant trope in the works of Rubens and as the initial gesture of Spenser's heroic poem.
