Jo Ann Hoeppner Moran Cruz surveys the diverse content of Penn R. Szittya's scholarship. She illuminates the subtle threads in his early work that start to weave the tapestry of his major study on antifraternal tradition, but she also demonstrates the breadth of his scholarly interests and the range of topics and texts on which he has written. Penn's work spans the early and late medieval periods, exploring, for example, the Old English Andreas; millennial apocalyptic texts; the Song of Roland; Peter Abelard; Chaucer, Langland, Gower, and other late-medieval authors; and less well-known but highly intriguing works such as James le Palmer's fourteenth-century Omne bonum. In addition, Penn published an influential article in modernist studies on Joseph Conrad's 1911 novel Under Western Eyes. As this piece, as well as his interest in Wallace Stevens, both suggest, Penn's work has long engaged in an important conversation about the relationship between the medieval and the modern. Cruz also details the contribution that Penn's most recognized work, The Antifraternal Tradition in Medieval Literature (Princeton, 1986), has made to the field. Her essay ends by acknowledging Penn's equally important contributions as a teacher.
