This chapter considers the author's attitude to the Church. The Cloud and its accompanying treatises speak of mysticism as a way of life within the Church. The mystic is one who lives the life of the Church at its highest level and in all its richness. It is a life in which the contemplative, united with God, sacrifices himself for salvation of all men on earth and in purgatory. Contemplation built upon obedience to the Church and fidelity to prayer and sacramental life, is a development of the sanctifying grace received at Baptism and restored through the sacrament of Penance.
