This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is largely a political history of Catholics in New York, especially in New York City, from the colonial period through to about 1820. Its chief focus is on how Catholics (in particular, the men) developed, advanced, and defended their own political interest in the decades after the American Revolution. The book examines how the Catholic Church adjusted to minority status in a predominantly Protestant state with no established church.
