This book centers upon the union and explanation of the three major subjects in Stanley Cavell's philosophy: Shakespeare, Emerson, and the Hollywood movies. His commitment to sustained study of these mainstream subjects has enabled his idea to achieve its purpose in areas that are usually out of bounds for his colleagues. This book explores specifically the diverse worlds of intellectual and artistic venture where Shakespeare, philosophy, and Hollywood movies became comprehensible to one another. Cavell insists that the value of art resides in its formative power, a power released by our response to the shaping of influence and he also regularly shows his willingness to run the risk that he may be wrong with regard to plays and movies.
