This chapter examines Catholic literature after Vatican II. It suggests that because the panegyric discourse of Vatican II strives to embrace such a broad vision of the Church, it tends to laud the social dimension of the faith. In contrast to this rhetoric of individuality, Vatican II emphasized a second set of terms that encouraged believers to imagine the Church as essentially social. This chapter also analyzes the shift in the representation of the Church in literature.

Keywords: Catholic literature; Vatican II; social dimension of faith; Church in literature; religion and literature
