Archaeological evidence for each phase of occupation of Quseir Fort came in two forms: the excavations and examination of the surviving structures. The evidence from each of these sources is set out in this book for each phase of the fort's development. A total of six phases of development were identified on the basis of the structural evidence and excavated evidence: Phase I (foundation, ca. 1571), Phase II (1571-early seventeenth century), Phase III (mid-late seventeenth century), Phase IV (eighteenth century), Phase V (Napoleonic), and Phase VI (nineteenth and twentieth centuries). This chapter covers phases I–III, the foundation and early history of Quseir Fort. The fortifications are very reminiscent of the sixteenth-century defenses of Jedda preserved in a contemporary Portuguese engraving. The fort was intended to accommodate artillery from the period of its construction as specified in the foundation firman.
