This chapter explores the most recent patterns of internal and international migration in Egypt. It specifically attempts to answer the following questions: Have the current rates and patterns of internal migration changed? Is rural-to-urban migration no longer a concern for Egypt? What are the recent patterns of international migration in Egypt? Is international migration still playing an important role in the Egyptian economy? The chapter also uses a very rich new data set, namely the Egypt Labor Market Panel Survey 2006 (ELMPS 2006). Given the panel nature of the data, it enables the investigation of the internal migration rates over time and also the current and previous patterns of international migration. There is evidence to suggest that overall internal migration rates increased in the eight years spanning 1998–2006, relative to the post-economic reforms period from 1990–1998. In addition, the data shows that international migration is still an important feature of the Egyptian economy.
