The Re-Making of Old Cairo in the Image of Its Past

Show Summary Details

Over the past twenty years, Old Cairo has become the focus of attention for a number of groups with different agendas. Tourism, different businesses, religion, and politics are now added to the elements in the modern making of Old Cairo. The higher profile brought by increased visitors has contributed to the regular cycles of “restoration” on different monuments and to the formation of a restoration industry that is by now established in and around Cairo. In contrast to the full-scale restoration projects, more limited conservation and maintenance of the buildings and monuments of Old Cairo have played a less active part in recent years. Between 2000 and 2006, construction activities in Old Cairo were greatly increased by the activities of Contract 102.
