This chapter examines the impact of waqf on built urban areas in terms of formation, development, and preservation. It examines the case study of the historical commercial center of the city of Adana in Turkey. It focuses on the waqfiyas of Piri Mehmed Paºa, the founder of the Ramazanoðlu waqf, to which the historical commercial center belonged. These waqfiyas make mention of endowed properties, employees of the waqf, their salaries, management of the waqf, the duties of the supervisor (mutevelli; Arabic mutawalli), and so on. As is customary in endowment deeds, the endowed properties are described and situated with reference to surrounding buildings or areas. Furthermore, the deeds specify conditions for the preservation of the buildings, the financing of repair activities, and the responsibilities of technical staff.
