This introductory chapter explains the objective of this book, which is to bring about a better understanding of Cairo, the capital of Egypt and the largest city in Africa. This book does not provide startling insights or startling revelations applicable across the urban Third World, but it demonstrates an approach that can be applied to other cities. It describes the city's modern history, geography, built environment, transport, economy, and especially its population, focusing on the last fifty years or so.
