This chapter discusses the dominance of the informal mode of urban development in Greater Cairo, Egypt during the last decades. In 2009, 11 million or about 63 percent of the total inhabitants of Greater Cairo lived in areas that had been developed informally or extralegally since 1960. This chapter attempts to provide an accurate picture of Cairo's informal areas and their underlying causes and investigates the images of and attitudes towards informal areas. It also describes the nature and characteristics of informal housing and determines the extents and location of informal areas.
