Based on the statement of Saad Hassan Al Zubaidi, a freelance filmmaker in Yemen, they do not have a history of cinema in Yemen, since they do not have cinema at all. Al Zubaidi was the first Yemeni to complete his studies in feature film at the Moscow Film Institute in 1981. Since then he has been able to make only one sixty-minute film. In 1983, Al Zubaidi's company, Yemen Cinema, made more than seventy documentaries and promotional films for foreign organizations, Yemeni ministries, and private individuals. In 1962, North Yemen was declared a republic after a revolution. Until then movie houses were banned on religious grounds, even though the political and religious leader of the country, Imam Ahmed, was a film lover. On the other hand, South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967, and in 1973 South Yemen nationalized the film industry and established a General Film Organization.
