This chapter examines the nature of communism and of the revolution's political culture in Cuba in relation to the notion of civil society. It discusses the changes in the conception of civil society and suggests that the term should be used with caution when assessing the nature of the Cuban political system since 1959. The chapter explores the underlying ideology of the Revolution and evaluates the impact of communism on the debate concerning civil society.
