This chapter examines the confrontation between China and Japan in 1931. The newly appointed Commander in Chief of the Asiatic Fleet Admiral Montgomery Taylor was unprepared for handling conflicts such as this. The problem started when Japanese army officer Captain Nakamura Shuntaro was murdered while investigating in an area of Manchuria close to the Mongolian border. This chapter highlights the inevitability of a collision between the rival claims of Japanese imperialism and Chinese nationalism in Manchuria.
