Documenting Popular Modernism

Show Summary Details

This chapter begins with a documentation of popular modernism and a description of the methods that were used to collect case study data. It then discusses the physical characteristics of modernist buildings. It specifically endeavors to analyze Brazilian modernism through interviews with the inhabitants of popular modernist homes and an examination of the buildings' façades and floor plans. It concludes with a discussion of how the architectural information disseminated through different media actually reached the Brazilian middle class. In addition, the physical inventory of houses in Belo Horizonte is shown. It also provides an extensive review of popular magazines and scholarly literature with the goal of illuminating why this phenomenon occurred in Brazil and, correspondingly, what forces might explain its appearance there but apparently not elsewhere in the world. The different means of information dissemination found reinforce the importance of using multiple strategies to explore the phenomenon of popular modernism, since each means was identified through a different type of research.
