This chapter discusses the end of the twentieth century in Latin America. The socialist impulse was exhausted, and after almost a century of socialist action the levels of ignorance and poverty were still terribly high. Although the presence of free market economies in some Latin American countries was promising, the progress was slow. The chapter is devoted to giving a clear picture of the status and development of Latin America during the last few years of the twentieth century and the early years of the twenty-first.
