Show Summary Details

This chapter examines the role of Samuel Hood in the American War of Independence as a flag officer of the British Royal Navy. Now that Hood was in a theatre of active operations, he had a chance to demonstrate his abilities. However, he was only in second place in the chain of command under George Rodney. This chapter suggests that the appointment of Hood as second to Rodney was surprising to his contemporaries and explains that even in his later career Hood never achieved a victory in a major engagement.
