This chapter examines the demographic dynamism and continuity of the colonial Ch'orti' population. It describes the life-ways of Maya people and the land-use practices in this region, as well as the pressures placed on these people by Spanish colonization. The analysis of colonial documents show that among the Ch'orti', populations and settlements were fairly localized but far from stable, and significant migrations did occur.
