For most of the convoy's travelers, however, home was in Europe, and getting there was laborious and complicated. It was a stroke of luck that the Spaniards regrouped in Norfolk. By the time Huoni had arrived in Norfolk on September 19, with what remained of the Galga's crew and cargo, several important developments had already taken place that would influence the Spanish reception in the Virginia port. Later, after a public vote, Huoni assumed responsibility for the ship's navigation, and he took the Allerton into Cádiz on March 2, 1751. For many, but not all, the prolonged return to Spain was over.
